The Second Chance Partners alternative education model offers students the opportunity to complete their high school education while gaining real work experience. The alternative education model combines classroom learning and the application of knowledge in a workplace setting. Students participate in their own education and receive tangible rewards for doing well.

Through Second Chance students learn how to perform calculations and solve problems by addressing real world challenges, where the results are immediately apparent. This alternative high school approach energizes young people who have distanced themselves from the conventional high school model. In this setting, they see the relevancy between classroom lessons and what they’re doing every day on the job.

Students spend two hours per day in the education center focusing on basic core academic subjects - communications, math, science, social studies and financial literacy.  Additionally, they complete coursework in blueprint reading, computer aided design and manufacturing operations.  The students also develop information and communications technology (ICT) literacy through instruction in computer skills and daily use of the wireless network lab that is provided for their instruction. The remaining six hours of their day are spent in the workplace where they receive on-the-job training and develop workplace skills.

Through their experiences in the education center and the workplace, students learn such skills as collaboration, communication, creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving. The education model also provides opportunities for students to develop other aspects of their character such as accountability, adaptability, ethics, leadership and personal and social responsibility. Working closely with teachers, mentors and fellow workers, students learn the value of teamwork, responsibility and effective decision-making. Setting goals and achieving success is the natural outcome. The ultimate goal of Second Chance Partners is student success.
